The Borough of Deal was incorporated on March 7, 1898 and in 1998 marked its Centennial Anniversary with a year long series of celebrations. The 1898 Act of the New Jersey Legislature officially created Deal, separating it from Ocean Township and according the small town with Borough status. William H. Appleton was the first Mayor of Deal and Harry I. Franco serves as the 13th Mayor of Deal.

Deal comprises one to two square miles and is situated directly on the Atlantic Coast. Presently bordered by Long Branch, Ocean Township and Allenhurst. Deal was originally much larger and included all of the area between Deal Lake and Takenesse Lake.
